At this concert the Portland State Chamber Choir, Rose Choir and Thorn Choir explore the widest possible range of sounds and styles available for the human voice. Experience world travel through the spirit of music, focusing on legends of rebirth and renewal.

The world’s best-known living choral composer conducts a concert of his own music! This magical tour de force includes favorites like “Water Night” and excerpts from “The Sacred Veil,” Whitacre’s newest major work. Then the Portland State choirs will be joined by the PSU Wind Symphony and a city-wide high school honor choir to form a massive ensemble of over 300 voices, creating a surround-sound experience of the hauntingly beautiful “Sleep.”

The Portland State Chamber Choir presents the second ever performance of Kile Smith’s The Consolation of Apollo which they will also present at the 2020 World Symposium on Choral Music in Auckland, New Zealand - the most prestigious scholarly event on choral music in the world. The Consolation of Apollo combines the words of the Apollo 8 astronauts as they rounded the moon and saw earthrise for the first time are combined with text by the medieval scholar Boethius contemplating humanity’s place in the universe. The work culminates in the Genesis creation text, which the astronauts read to the world as humanity gazed at the earth for the first time via a television transmission. The concert will conclude with a series of Chamber Choir favorites as alumni join the current choir to celebrate the end of Ethan Sperry’s 10th season as conductor of the ensemble.

"Shakespeare and Sibelius, these two geniuses, have found each other,” commented one reviewer at the 1926 premiere of Shakespeare’s The Tempest with incidental music by Finland’s national hero, Jean Sibelius. Acclaimed stage director Mary Birnbaum, whose direction of Bluebeard’s Castle stunned audiences in 2016, returns to bring this iconic tale of magic and betrayal to life in a live dramatic production.
